The History

Woodcock Farm, historically known as Coldharbour, is estimated as being built in the 18th Century, and features an ‘L’ shaped farmstead set up of farmhouse with connected barn, typical of those found in the Peak District at that time.

The Farm was one of the smallest and poorest of the twenty four farms in Glossop – this possibly being the reason it was leased to the founders of Glossop and District Golf Club in 1894 for £50 per annum, whilst still running as a working farm!

Unsurprisingly, the complicated marriage of farming and golf was not a happy one, and petty disputes were constant. In 1902 the club even moved their clubhouse into the farm buildings – an arrangement which, funnily enough, only lasted a brief 2 years before they built their own building across the course – where the current clubhouse stands today.

In 1925 the Club were able to purchase Woodcock Farm, and its some 47,000 acres for £1000.

The farm vs golf course situation continued until 1932, when the last farming tenant left and the club’s pro, Walter Fitton, moved in. For around the next 20 years Walter’s footsteps wore a footpath from Woodcock Farmhouse down to the club, where he was not only their pro but also acting barman, caterer, green-keeper, handyman, shopkeeper and even shepherd! The little gate he used to walk across to the club is still in position on the driveway today.

Walter Fitton

Fitton lived in the farmhouse until 1962 when he and his family moved into a purpose built home next to the clubhouse, with Woodcock Farm being sold to the Daley family for a grand sum of £1000. The Daleys lived in and loved this beautiful property for 56 years before downsizing, and selling the property to its current owners – the Coulthurst family, who completed a full renovation, bringing the house into the modern era and converting the barn into the two holiday cottages we see today.

If you enjoy golf, then a round at Glossop and District Golf Club is an absolute must during your stay with at Woodcock Farm. The 18 hole course, accessed directly from our property, is set amidst the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park, affording fantastic views from every hole, excellent greens and well conditioned fairways.
